Head Start Van Driver - Part Time

STATEMENT OF THE JOB: Under the overall supervision of the Early Childhood Director and the direct supervision of the Center Manager, carries out all duties and responsibilities related to the transportation of children and maintenance of designated vehicles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Drive (up to 14 passengers) van along designated routes, adhering to schedules and traffic violations.
  • Complete a daily inspection of the van including tires, oil, wiper blades, etc., and report all van maintenance issues to your supervisor.
  • Always maintain a professional attitude with staff, parents, volunteers, and children. Work with the Supervisor in designing bus routes.
  • Drive bus on designated route morning and afternoon five days a week. Responsible for safe transportation of children as they board, ride, and leave the bus and return to their parents or other authorized adult.
  • Seeing that buses are always in good operating condition and reporting any problems to the direct supervisor
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment inside and outside the bus through regular cleaning.
  • Participate in the required Random Drug and Alcohol Testing for Bus Drivers/Sensitive Drivers.
  • Participate in required training and behind-the-wheel instruction training prior to transporting any children. This training involves the following: operating the vehicle in a safe and efficient manner; safely running a fixed route; administering basic first aid in case of an injury; handling emergency situations, including vehicle evacuation procedures; operating special equipment such as a wheelchair lift; assistance devices or special occupant restraints; conducting routine maintenance and safety checks of the vehicle; maintain accurate records regarding their bus and children who are being transported.
  • The record-keeping includes:
    1. Accident reports
    2. Pre- and post-trip inspections for the operation of the vehicle
    3. Regular ongoing maintenance records
    4. Contact information for release of a child to a parent or guardian
  • Establish written fixed bus routes and alternate routes
  • Maintain their assigned vehicle and ensure that appropriate safety inspections have been completed for its operation as required by state laws.
  • Must have an annual evaluation that includes an on-board observation of their performance while driving a bus route.
  • Perform minor repairs to the vehicle, as necessary, to ensure safe facilities.
  • Assist in the avoidance or appearance of fraud and ensure compliance in the Transportation area.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Educational Requirements: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience Requirements: Three months’ experience driving a bus or similar size vehicle. Must have a good driving record. Experience in minor vehicle repairs, Basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be at least 25 years of age.
  • Able to pass tuberculosis screening.
  • Successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam prior to employment and annually thereafter.
  • Successfully pass drug screening prior to employment.
  • Have access to transportation with liability insurance and willing to use vehicle for Agency related travel. Able to travel out of area overnight.
  • Able to hear and communicate orally with children and adults.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Some items may occasionally exceed this limit, use necessary protective equipment and/or get help as needed.

New Hire Incentive:

Receive $500.00 Van Driver New Hire Incentive following a satisfactory 90-day job performance review.

Anyone without a CDL must be willing to obtain CDL within 12 months of hire with CAPCA support for cost.

$16.38/per hour

Hours of work: Morning 6:30AM -8:30 AM and Afternoon 2:00PM - 4:00PM
