Infant/Toddler Teacher

STATEMENT OF THE JOB: Under the overall supervision of the Early Childhood Director and the direct supervision of the Project Director, the Infant/Toddler Teacher is responsible for directly providing care, supervision and guidance to infants/toddlers and implementing the educational program in the infant/toddler classroom.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintain a professional attitude with staff, parents, volunteers, and children at all times.
  2. Plan and implement learning experiences that advance the intellectual and physical development of children, including improving the readiness of children for school by developing their:
  • literacy, phonemic, and print awareness
  • understanding and use of language
  • understanding and use of increasing complex and varied vocabulary
  • appreciation of books
  • understanding of early math and early science
  • problem-solving abilities and
  • approaches to learning.
  1. Establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment.
  2. Support the social and emotional development of children.
  3. Encourage the involvement of the families of the children and support the development of relationships between children and their families.
  4. Responsible for forming positive, trusting and nurturing relationships with children.
  5. Responsible for:
  • creating a warm and welcoming environment that supports children’s growth and development
  • implementing the curriculum and developing and implementing daily lesson plans
  • promoting developmentally appropriate practices
  • using routines as opportunities for growth and learning.
  • providing activities that facilitate children’s growth and development
  • arranging and conducting educational home visits and parent conferences and
  • guiding children’s behavior in positive ways.
  1. Promote good eating habits with toddlers by conversing and encouraging good table manners when food is served.
  2. Responsible for observing children regularly and individualizing for each child based on these observations.
  3. Responsible for ongoing assessment of enrolled children to monitor child outcomes.
  4. Provide supervision for children, or volunteers in the classroom.
  5. Responsible for maintaining daily a high quality program of work and designated record keeping.
  6. Work cooperatively with other classroom/center staff.
  7. Is knowledgeable in all aspects of use and design of learning centers.
  8. Responsible for the orderliness and cleanliness of the classroom.
  9. Assist in providing training and technical assistance to other center staff in overall child development.
  10. Work with Administrative Office staff, support staff and consultants in implementing recommendations.
  11. Assist in the assessment of the Education and Early Childhood Development Work Plan.
  12. Attend and participate in center staff meetings. Participate in parent meetings and staffings as requested.
  13. Assist in obtaining and documenting In-Kind (Non-Federal Match) for parent and community activities.
  14. Must be able to see, hear and respond to children’s needs, emergencies and conflicts that might occur in the classroom, playground, bathrooms or other areas used by children.
  15. Responsible for data management in child development areas.
  16. Assist in the avoidance or appearance of fraud and ensure compliance in the overall management of the Early Childhood area.

NON- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Respect confidentiality in all aspects of the Head Start Program.
  2. Participate in all training designed for professional development.
  3. Document attendance of a minimum of 15 clock hours of approved professional developmentper year that is high-quality, sustained, intensive and classroom-focused.
  4. Able to handle stress, tension and exasperation that contact with many children and adults may bring every day.
  5. May be called upon to administer first aid to children or staff at any time in the program. The incidental nature of this circumstance effectively establishes first aid as a collateral duty rather than a primary one.
  6. Perform other duties as needed and required for efficient operation of the Center, needs and welfare of the children.

Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Educational Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED AND Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential with Infant/Toddler Endorsement are required. Being enrolled in a Child Development Associate credential program to be completed within 2 years of hire or enrolled in a program leading to an associate or bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education may be accepted in lieu of current CDA if deemed appropriate.
  • Current Early Childhood Ancillary Teaching Certificate (ECAC) or must obtain within 24 months of hire.
  1. Experience Requirements:
  • One program year experience working with infants and toddlers 6 weeks to 3 years of age.

  1. Physical Requirements:
  • Good physical condition. Able to lift children, able to sit and stand for long periods of time. Participate in activities requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and jumping.Occasionally stand or walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Must pass tuberculosis screening annually and Initial Health Examination within 3 months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license, access to transportation with liability insurance and willing to use vehicle for Agency realted travel.
  • Must be able to travel out of area overnight to attend training.
  • Able to hear and communicate orally with children and adults.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  1. Skill Requirements:
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations.

  1. Personal Traits:
  • Be in sympathy with the concepts of the Head Start Program.
  • Able to delegate responsibilities.
  • Able to keep confidential information without inappropriately divulging it.
  • Planning and organizational abilities.
  • Able to make decisions and work without continual close supervision.

CDA $ 14.33, Associate's Degree $16.38, Bachelor's Degree $ 17.14

Hours of work:

Children present: 7:30-3:30

Children not present: 7:30-4:00, with a 30-minute lunch break
